Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
