New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
